According to the DGP, the police were conducting a combing operation aimed at curbing Maoist activities in the area. This operation became necessary after Maoists allegedly killed tribal individuals, accusing them of acting as informants. During the operation, the police faced an attack from Maoists who were reportedly armed with advanced weapons. The officers had to respond with gunfire in self-defense.
