Hyderabad: The Telangana Farmers’ Association (TFA) has called on the government to resolve the ongoing urea shortage in the state.
TFA leaders, including President Pothineni Sudarshan Rao and Secretary T Sagar, highlighted that due to timely rains, paddy planting is progressing well, with ample water available in reservoirs, ponds, and canals.
Despite this, farmers are struggling to obtain essential fertilizers. In several districts, they endure long lines at cooperative societies and dealer shops. The unavailability of fertilizers could lead to lower crop yields. Some dealers are exploiting this situation by overcharging, with reports of a 40 kg urea bag being sold at Rs 267, more than the usual price.
Dealers are reportedly creating an artificial shortage, worsening the situation for farmers. The TFA demands strict action against these practices.
The central government had allocated 5 lakh metric tonnes of urea for April-June 2025, but only 3.06 lakh tonnes were supplied, leaving a shortfall of 1.94 lakh tonnes.
Agriculture department officials now report this shortage has grown to 2.24 lakh tonnes. They insist that the central government must fulfill the state’s fertilizer quota. If not addressed, farmers warn of state-wide protests.
