The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to implement a major policy change that will prohibit hotels and other private entities from making photocopies of Aadhaar cards.

The new rule, which has already received approval, will require identity verification to be conducted only through QR code scans or the upcoming Aadhaar app. This move effectively makes the practice of taking physical copies of Aadhaar cards illegal.

The decision aims to address growing concerns about data privacy and the unauthorized storage of personal information by hotels, event organizers, and other private establishments. Currently, many such entities routinely collect and store photocopies of Aadhaar cards, creating potential security risks.

Under the new framework, entities that conduct offline verification will be required to register formally with the authorities. This registration process will ensure accountability and proper oversight of organizations handling Aadhaar-based identity checks.

The QR code-based verification system allows hotels and other service providers to authenticate an individual’s identity without retaining any physical or digital copies of the document. The QR code present on Aadhaar cards contains encrypted demographic information that can be scanned and verified instantly.

This approach ensures that Aadhaar data remains with the cardholder rather than being stored in filing cabinets or computer systems of various establishments. The measure is expected to significantly reduce the risk of data breaches and misuse of personal information.

The upcoming Aadhaar app will provide another secure method for identity verification, giving users more control over when and how their information is shared. The app-based system will allow real-time authentication without the need for physical document handling.

Privacy advocates have long called for stricter regulations on how Aadhaar information is collected and stored by private entities. The unauthorized collection and retention of Aadhaar photocopies have raised concerns about potential identity theft and data misuse.

The new policy represents a significant shift in how identity verification will be conducted across various sectors, particularly in hospitality and event management. Hotels and other establishments will need to adopt the new technology-based verification systems to comply with the regulations.

The formal registration requirement for offline-verification entities will create a documented trail of organizations authorized to conduct Aadhaar-based identity checks, enhancing transparency and accountability in the system.
