YSR Telangana Party president YS Sharmila has recently spoken out against the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha. In a statement on Saturday, Sharmila expressed her disappointment in what she deemed an “unfortunate and undemocratic” decision, adding that it was “biased and bizarre”.
Sharmila, who is the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has been actively pursuing her own political career in Telangana. She has been targeting the BRS government in the state, but has refrained from commenting on the BJP, which has been increasing its criticism of the ruling party in Telangana.
In her statement, Sharmila accused the ruling BJP at the Centre of using a “unilateral and cruel step” to settle political scores with the Congress party. She pointed out that Rahul Gandhi had a 30-day window to present his case, and argued that constitutional rights should always be placed above political interests.
Sharmila called on all political parties to come together to condemn such “autocratic acts”, stating that the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi had put a scar on the democratic spirit of the country.
