Osmania University Develops Smart Sewage Monitoring System

Osmania University’s Civil Engineering Department has created an advanced sewage monitoring system that uses IoT (Internet of Things) technology. This system helps detect sewage overflows and harmful gases in real time, preventing hazards and ensuring worker safety.

A team of students and faculty, led by Prof. K Shashikanth, designed this system to improve urban waste management. Their research was recently presented at the ASCE International Conference on Sustainable Smart Cities (CISSC 2025) in Chandigarh.

Explaining the system, Prof. Shashikanth said it works like an electronic device that can be placed under sewer lines to measure water depth. It not only detects blockages but also sends alerts to concerned officials.

The system includes advanced sensors that detect toxic gases like methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. This helps prevent accidents and deaths caused by manual scavenging, a serious issue in cities like Hyderabad. The collected data is sent wirelessly to a cloud platform for real-time monitoring and quick action.

The team has already conducted a trial run on the Osmania University campus, which gave promising results. They are now in discussions with the state government and GHMC to implement this technology on a larger scale.
