Pizza outlets in Greater Hyderabad faced scrutiny after the Food Safety Commissioner inspected 55 locations. This included 18 Pizza Hut, 16 Dominos, and 21 local pizzerias and bakeries.
Pizza Hut Issues: Several outlets run by Devyani International Ltd and Sapphire Foods India showed concerns:
- Some lacked proper licenses or operated outside their jurisdiction.
- Veg and non-veg items were stored together.
- Equipment calibration was not up to standard.
Specific problems included:
- Hanamkonda: Unclean machines and tools.
- Warangal: Medical certificates issued without proper health checks.
- Nizamabad: No license display, improper freezer temperatures, and missing cleaning logs.
- Nalgonda: No license display, uncovered dustbins, and sauce bottles missing expiration dates.
Dominos Findings: Outlets managed by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd had similar issues:
- Many did not display their licenses.
Other problems were:
- Nizamabad: License expired, overdue pest control, lack of gloves/masks, no equipment calibration, and missing medical records.
- Hanumakonda: Dirty machines, no records, pest control outdated, and no medical checks for new staff.
- Warangal: Staff without gloves/masks, and medical certificates given without checks.
- Mahabubnagar: Veg and non-veg stored together, no medical records, and handlers not using gloves.
Local Pizzerias’ Concerns:
- Pizza Paradise & Master V Bakers in Hyderabad lacked license displays, medical certificates, used oil excessively, had unlabelled food, rusty ovens, and open kitchens without insect-proofing.
- Pizza Korner in Medak had uncovered vegetables, discarded overused oil, and lacked pest control and medical records.
- La Pinoz Pizza in Kokapet/Narsingi failed to clean machinery properly and discarded unsafe food.
The Food Safety Commissioner emphasized that samples were taken, and all outlets must address these issues promptly.
