Hyderabad: A devastating road accident in Chevella led to the loss of 19 lives. BJP MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy criticized the past BRS government for neglecting road safety and delaying infrastructure improvements.
Speaking on Tuesday, Reddy expressed sorrow over the fatalities. He emphasized the urgent need to upgrade roads, attributing frequent accidents to bad road conditions and high-speed traffic. He warned that even upgraded roads could be dangerous without careful planning and enforcement.
Reddy highlighted the Hyderabad-Bijapur Highway, which became a national highway in 2016. However, progress is slow due to bureaucratic issues, especially with land acquisition. “The earlier government’s failure in acquiring land has left crucial sections unfinished, putting travelers at risk,” he said.
Reddy dismissed claims by the BRS that he was responsible for the accident, questioning how he could be blamed when he wasn’t involved in sanctioning the road. He also criticized the Congress government for its relaxed approach, urging proper land acquisition to ensure safe road construction.
He advocated transforming regional roads into national highways for better engineering, funding, and safety. Addressing environmental concerns, Reddy assured that road projects would respect ecological needs. The National Green Tribunal approved the project, and efforts to relocate banyan trees are in progress to minimize environmental impact.
With construction underway, Reddy hoped for safer roads soon. He called for collaboration between state and central agencies to speed up work and prevent future tragedies. The tragic Chevella accident has sparked renewed discussions on road safety and governance, highlighting the importance of timely infrastructure completion and accountability.
