Residents from villages near Vikarabad took to the streets in a large demonstration along the Bijapur highway. The protesters demanded that authorities begin road expansion projects immediately.
Students joined local villagers in the protest march. They completely blocked traffic on the Vikarabad-Bijapur highway to draw attention to their demands.
The demonstration focused on the urgent need for wider roads due to frequent deadly crashes on this stretch. The protesters pointed to a recent tragic accident that killed 19 people as evidence of the highway’s dangerous conditions.
A devastating collision occurred on Monday when a TGSRTC bus crashed into a truck carrying gravel near Mirzapur on Chevella road. The powerful impact buried victims under debris instantly. The accident also left 22 people with injuries.
Local residents blame the narrow roadway for causing these fatal crashes. They argue that wider lanes would prevent such tragedies from happening repeatedly.
Another deadly incident struck the same area in December 2024. A truck plowed into a roadside vegetable market at Aloor on Chevella road, killing four vendors and injuring 10 others. Similar accidents continue to plague this highway route.
The protesters emphasized that immediate road widening work could save lives. They called on government officials to prioritize this infrastructure project before more families lose loved ones.
Traffic remained blocked during the demonstration as villagers refused to clear the road. They insisted that authorities must commit to starting construction work without further delays.
