Hyderabad, November 18, 2025 – The Telangana Health Department has issued an advisory warning of a likely surge in seasonal flu cases as temperatures across the state drop by 2°C to 3°C below normal.
Officials warned that the sudden chill creates favorable conditions for the spread of influenza and other respiratory infections, with cases of common cold, cough, and viral infections expected to increase significantly in the coming weeks.
Vulnerable Groups at Higher Risk
The department cautioned that certain groups face an elevated risk of severe flu complications during the cold season:
- Pregnant women
- Children under five years
- Older adults above 65 years
- Individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory conditions
These groups are advised to take extra precautions and consult healthcare providers if symptoms develop.
Understanding Seasonal Flu
Health authorities clarified that seasonal flu is a viral infection that typically resolves on its own within a week. Most cases do not require antibiotics, as antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections. Rest, hydration, and symptomatic treatment are usually sufficient for recovery.
However, complications can arise in vulnerable individuals, making early recognition and appropriate care essential.
Flu Prevention Guidelines
The health department recommends the following measures to prevent seasonal flu:
- Frequent handwashing with soap and water
- Covering mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing
- Avoiding close contact with people showing flu symptoms
- Staying warm and dressing in layers
- Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients
- Staying hydrated with warm fluids
- Getting adequate sleep to maintain immunity
What to Do If You Have Flu Symptoms
If flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, sore throat, or fatigue appear:
- Stay indoors and rest
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Self-isolate to prevent spreading the infection to others
- Monitor symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist beyond a week
Officials emphasized that self-isolation when sick is crucial to controlling the spread of seasonal flu in communities, schools, and workplaces.
Warning Signs Requiring Immediate Medical Attention
While most flu cases are mild, certain symptoms indicate potential complications requiring urgent medical care at the nearest government hospital:
- High fever that doesn’t respond to medication
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Bluish discoloration of skin or lips
- Blood in sputum
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Confusion or unusual behaviour
- Symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Protecting the Community
Health officials urged citizens to practice respiratory etiquette and avoid public gatherings if unwell. Simple preventive measures can significantly reduce flu transmission and protect vulnerable family and community members.
Parents are advised to keep children with flu symptoms home from school, and employers are encouraged to allow sick employees to rest at home to prevent workplace outbreaks.
The cold spell is expected to continue over the coming days, and health authorities will monitor flu activity across the state. Citizens are encouraged to follow the advisory guidelines and seek timely medical care when needed.
