The Centre has given its approval to Hyderabad Metro Phase-2. The Union Government cleared works spanning 76 kilometres at a cost of Rs 24,269 crore. The approval covers a total of five corridors. The government has set a target to complete the Phase-2 works by 2029.
The Telangana government had prepared a wider proposal for Phase-2. It aimed to expand the metro network by 122.9 kilometres through seven corridors. The estimated cost of the full project is Rs 38,595 crore. The state proposed to execute it as a joint venture between the Central and State governments.
The proposals include several key routes across the city and its outskirts:
- Nagole – Shamshabad Airport: Metro connectivity to the airport.
- Raidurgam – Kokapet Neopolis: A route serving IT and residential areas.
- MGBS – Chandrayangutta: Metro expansion in the Old City area.
- Miyapur – Patancheru: Connectivity to industrial and residential areas.
- LB Nagar – Hayathnagar: Transport access for eastern suburbs.
- JBS – Medchal: Metro expansion to north Hyderabad.
- JBS – Shamirpet: Connectivity to northern suburbs.
The city’s IT corridors and suburban areas are expanding rapidly. This has created a need to extend metro services to more areas. The Phase-2 project aims to reduce traffic congestion in Hyderabad and provide faster public transport to commuters.
A larger metro network can reduce the number of people who depend on private vehicles. Office-goers, students and employees can use public transport more easily. The metro can also ease traffic pressure on busy main roads and save travel time. These benefits will be fully available only after the new corridors are built and services begin.
