Sydney: Australian authorities have confirmed the identity of one of the gunmen involved in the deadly shooting near Bondi Beach, while the identity of a second suspect remains officially undisclosed as investigations continue.

According to ABC News and law enforcement sources, Naveed Akram, a Pakistani national, has been identified as one of the attackers. Police confirmed that Akram’s residence in Bonnyrigg, western Sydney, was raided as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.

Second Suspect in Critical Condition

Authorities stated that a second individual involved in the attack is currently hospitalised in critical condition. While police have confirmed they know the individual’s identity, officials have not released the name, citing operational and investigative reasons.

Law enforcement agencies have urged the public to avoid sharing unverified claims circulating on social media, emphasizing that only officially released information should be considered accurate.

Attack During Hanukkah Gathering

The shooting occurred as members of Sydney’s Jewish community gathered to mark the lighting of the first Hanukkah candle. Police confirmed that 12 people were killed in the attack, which involved the discharge of approximately 50 rounds of ammunition.

Among the victims was Rabbi Eli Shlanger, who was killed at the scene, authorities confirmed.

Civilian Intervention Prevented Further Casualties

Police acknowledged the actions of a civilian who intervened during the attack, tackling one of the gunmen while he was reloading. Officials said this intervention likely prevented further loss of life before police units arrived and neutralised the threat.

National Security Response

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Committee of Cabinet following the attack, describing the incident as “shocking and distressing.”

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley also issued a statement, noting that the attack occurred at a time when the Jewish community had gathered for religious observance.

Ongoing Investigation

Police confirmed that the investigation is continuing, including efforts to identify possible associates and determine whether the attack involved a broader network. Authorities said further updates, including details regarding the second suspect, will be released when it does not compromise the investigation.

Residents in parts of western Sydney were advised to expect increased police activity as inquiries continue.
