The BRS and BJP walked out of the Assembly on Thursday, refusing to support the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Despite their opposition, the Bill, along with two others – the Telangana Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Telangana Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2024 – was passed without their backing.

During the session, which extended late into the night, heated debates unfolded over the Greater Hyderabad Bill. Opposition parties criticized the State government for its use of HYDRA, a system they claimed caused fear among residents. They argued that HYDRA’s actions, particularly demolitions, had led to a decline in real estate demand.

BRS MLA KP Vivekanand raised concerns about HYDRA’s role and pointed to the delay in conducting the caste census. This, he said, was one of the reasons BRS legislators chose to walk out instead of supporting the Bill. Similarly, BJP floor leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy also cited HYDRA as the reason for his party’s walkout.

Meanwhile, AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi stated his party did not support the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill either, also referencing the pending caste census. However, AIMIM extended its support to the other two bills discussed during the session.
