The Telangana state Bhagiratha Sagara Sangham has asked the Sagar community to celebrate Bhagiratha Maharshi Jayanti on May 14th in every village in India. Bhagiratha Maharshi is a respected figure in Hindu mythology known for bringing the Ganga river to earth from heaven through his determination and efforts. Legend has it that Bhageeratha performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma and bring Ganga to earth to cleanse the sins of their ancestors.
Brahma granted his wish but warned about the force of Ganga’s descent, which could devastate the earth. To mitigate this, Bhagiratha sought Lord Shiva’s help, who agreed to hold Ganga in his hair to reduce its impact when it descended. This event is celebrated as Ganga Dashora, symbolizing the arrival of the holy river Ganga on earth. As descendants of Bhageeratha, people celebrate Bhageeratha Maharshi Jayanti on Ganga avtaran divas.
The celebration includes various rituals and prayers to honor Bhagiratha’s feat of bringing Ganga down to earth. It is a time for the community to come together and pay tribute to this significant event in Hindu mythology. The day holds great importance for those who believe in the power and sanctity of the Ganga river. The Sagar community is encouraged to participate in the celebrations and remember the legacy of Bhagiratha Maharshi on this auspicious occasion.
