Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has launched a major initiative to permanently address drinking water shortages in rapidly expanding areas along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Hyderabad. The project targets fast-developing hubs including Neopolis and Kokapet, where population growth has sharply increased water demand. The government has allocated 3.95 acres of land to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) in the Neopolis area specifically for water infrastructure development.

The project will enable gravity-based drinking water supply to Mehdipatnam and Shaikpet regions, eliminating the need for energy-intensive pumping systems. Godavari river water will be transported to the Bozagutta Reservoir through gravity flow, significantly reducing electricity and pumping charges. The allocated land is located at an elevation of approximately +592 meters, making it ideal for supplying water across the service area using natural gravity flow without requiring additional pumping infrastructure.

Rapid population growth and urban expansion around Hyderabad, especially near the ORR corridor, have created unprecedented demand for drinking water. To meet future needs, the Revanth government is implementing Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project – Phases II & III, along with plans to rejuvenate the Musi River by filling Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs with Godavari waters. The comprehensive project includes diversion of an additional 300 MGD of water to meet long-term urban requirements.

Due to rapid vertical urbanisation in Neopolis and surrounding areas, water demand has increased substantially. Infrastructure works currently underway in the Kokapet Neopolis layout include construction of a sump and pump house, section office, Ground Level Service Reservoir (GLSR), and a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). These facilities are being developed to support the growing population and ensure adequate water supply infrastructure.

The existing 8.75 acres of land at the Khanapur campus is sufficient only for a 22.5 ML Master Balancing Reservoir, two Elevated Level Service Reservoirs (ELSRs), chlorination room and maintenance facilities. Recognizing the need for additional infrastructure, the government approved the allocation of adjoining HMDA-identified lands totaling 3.95 acres for an overhead tank covering 1.18 acres, HMDA Site Office covering 0.77 acres, and Ashram land covering 2.00 acres.

Government orders were issued allocating the land to strengthen drinking water infrastructure in the Kokapet–Neopolis growth corridor. The strategic location and elevation of the land will enable efficient water distribution across multiple areas without requiring costly pumping operations. The new infrastructure will integrate with existing water supply networks to create a comprehensive distribution system.

The new reservoir will supply water not only to Neopolis and Kokapet but also to Bozagutta Reservoir, Old City areas, Shaikpet, Red Hills, and Mehdipatnam. The gravity-based supply system will ensure reliable drinking water availability while reducing power consumption and operational costs. This multi-area approach will benefit thousands of residents across several neighborhoods in the city.

The project represents a significant step toward sustainable water management in Hyderabad’s expanding urban areas. The gravity-based distribution system will provide long-term cost savings on electricity and maintenance while ensuring consistent water supply to residents. The infrastructure development is part of the government’s broader vision to address water security challenges facing the rapidly growing metropolitan region.
