Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is travelling to Mumbai today to meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tomorrow. The meeting aims to resolve the deadlock over the Tummidihatti barrage and secure Maharashtra’s approval to build it at a height of 152 metres.

The key demand is to raise the barrage height from 148 metres to 152 metres. A higher barrage would allow water to move by gravity, which would reduce power costs. It is also intended to provide irrigation and drinking water to the drought-prone districts of North Telangana.

The Telangana government has revived the long-neglected Pranahita–Chevella project. The Chief Minister has held sustained reviews of the project and pushed for the higher barrage through direct negotiations.

He has also written letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and met the Union Jal Shakti Minister on the issue. The state has secured technical studies and submitted contour maps. It has also asked the Centre to facilitate interstate negotiations with Maharashtra.

The talks in Mumbai take the matter directly to the Maharashtra government. The outcome will decide whether the barrage can be built at the proposed 152-metre height.

The Telangana government describes the project as vital to North Telangana’s irrigation future, farmers’ prosperity and drinking water security.
