Hyderabad: Telangana witnessed the coldest morning of the ongoing winter season as temperatures dipped sharply across several districts, with parts of the state recording single-digit minimum temperatures.
According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) and readings from Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), Sangareddy district reported the lowest temperature of the season so far, while Hyderabad city matched its earlier coldwave minimum.
Sangareddy Records Season’s Lowest Temperature
The lowest temperature in the state was recorded at Kohir mandal in Sangareddy district, where the mercury dropped to 4.5°C. This is the coldest temperature reported in Telangana during the current winter season.
Other parts of the Sangareddy district also experienced severe cold conditions:
- Zahirabad (Algole): 5.4°C
- Mogdampalle: 6.8°C
- Gummadidala (Nallavelli): 7.1°C
- Patancheru (Pashamylaram): 7.1°C
The widespread drop in temperatures across Sangareddy indicates the intensity of the cold spell affecting western Telangana.
Hyderabad City Records 6.3°C
In Hyderabad, the lowest temperature was recorded at the University of Hyderabad (Serilingampally), where the minimum temperature touched 6.3°C. This reading matches the coldest temperature earlier recorded in the city on December 11, indicating a repeat of coldwave-like conditions.
Several other areas in and around Hyderabad also reported low minimum temperatures:
- Rajendranagar: 7.4°C
- Moulali (Uppal): 7.5°C
- Ameerpet (Maheshwaram): 7.2°C
- Ibrahimpatnam: 6.1°C
The temperature distribution map prepared by TGDPS shows cooler pockets, particularly in the western and southern parts of Hyderabad, including Serilingampally and Rajendranagar.
Single-Digit Temperatures Across Telangana
Several districts across Telangana recorded minimum temperatures between 5°C and 8°C, highlighting the spread of cold conditions beyond the Hyderabad region.
Notable minimum temperature readings include:
- Sirpur (U), Kumuram Bheem Asifabad: 4.8°C
- Tiryani, Kumuram Bheem: 5.1°C
- Mominpet, Vikarabad: 5.8°C
- Arli (T), Adilabad: 5.9°C
- Bantwaram, Vikarabad: 6.1°C
- Shamirpet region: Around 7.0°C
Districts such as Vikarabad, Adilabad, Medak, Kamareddy, Siddipet, and Rangareddy also reported widespread cold conditions during the early morning hours.
No Rainfall Recorded
AWS data indicates that no rainfall (0.0 mm) was recorded across all monitored locations during this period. The temperature drop is attributed to clear skies, dry conditions, and cold northerly winds, which allow rapid heat loss during the night.
Weather Conditions and Advisory
Meteorological observations suggest that the prevailing weather pattern—marked by low humidity and calm winds—is contributing to colder nights and chilly mornings across Telangana.
Residents, particularly in rural areas and city outskirts, are advised to take precautions during early morning and late-night hours. Extra care is recommended for children, elderly persons, and outdoor workers. Motorists are also advised to exercise caution during early hours due to reduced comfort levels in cold conditions.
Outlook for the Coming Days
Weather experts indicate that cold mornings are likely to persist for the next few days across north, west, and central Telangana, including Hyderabad. While no extreme coldwave warning has been issued so far, temperatures are expected to remain below normal for this time of year.
The repeated dip into single-digit temperatures suggests that December is shaping up to be colder than average across several parts of Telangana.
