The Congress party in Khammam district is facing a tough decision in choosing a candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Supporters of Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy’s brother, P Prasad Reddy, and Deputy Chief Minister’s wife Mallu Nandini are campaigning for their leaders to be nominated for the Khammam Lok Sabha seat. The party has not made a final decision yet.
Both Prasad Reddy and Nandini have been touring the district, meeting their supporters and party members. Despite no official announcement, their activities resemble those of a campaign. The Khammam Lok Sabha constituency, consisting of seven segments, is a key battleground within the Congress party due to its history of success in the region.
While the Congress won six seats in the previous Assembly elections in Khammam, one seat was secured with CPI’s support. This background has given party leaders hope for winning the MP seat in Khammam. Although four open seats in the state were announced by Congress, the competition for Khammam remains fierce.
Minority leaders are advocating for Mohammed Javeed, City Congress President, to receive the ticket for the Khammam MP seat. They believe Javeed’s support from minority voters during the Assembly elections makes him a strong contender for victory in the constituency. Other parties like BRS and BJP are also actively planning their strategies, focusing on specific communities.
The BJP has chosen Tandra Vinod Rao, a member of the Velama caste, as their candidate for the Khammam Lok Sabha seat. On the other hand, the BRS has named Nama Nageswara Rao, a prominent member of the Kamma community and the current MP, as their contender for the same seat.
