Hyderabad, April 26: With cybercrime cases witnessing a sharp surge across Telangana, Rachakonda Cybercrime DCP S.V. Naga Lakshmi has urged citizens who fall victim to digital fraud to register an FIR in addition to calling the national cyber helpline 1930, emphasizing that this critical step significantly increases the chances of recovering stolen money.
“Many victims stop after reporting to 1930, unaware that without an official FIR, we cannot begin a formal investigation,” said DCP Naga Laxmi. She explained that the First Information Report (FIR) serves as the legal foundation for the police to begin probing cyber fraud cases, access the accused’s bank details, and trace the crime.
The DCP highlighted a growing concern — victims often delay filing FIRs, reducing the chances of retrieving their money. “Time is of the essence. The earlier the FIR is filed, the better the chances of recovery. Reporting during the ‘Golden Hour’ can make all the difference,” she said.
Further explaining the legal recovery process, she noted that once money is seized from a fraudster and deposited in court, it is returned to victims on a first-come, first-served basis. “If one victim delays and another reports quickly, the recovered funds will go to the latter. It’s an unfortunate reality for those who wait too long or ignore follow-ups,” she added.
The police are also facing challenges in following up with victims. “Sometimes we call them for more details, but they respond carelessly, not realizing that they are victims of a serious financial crime that warrants a full investigation,” DCP Naga Laxmi said.
Officials continue to advise citizens to stay vigilant and report cyber fraud immediately to 1930, followed by visiting their local police station to formally register a complaint.
