Delhi's power demand could decrease due to unseasonal rains in New Delhi

Officials in New Delhi say that recent unseasonal rains and cooler weather have led to a decrease in power demand in the city. Compared to May of last year, this year’s peak power demand has dropped by up to 40%. Last year, peak power demand ranged from 5,409 MW to 6,247 MW during the first eight days of May. This year, it has ranged from 3,644 MW to 4,634 MW. In May of last year, the peak power demand exceeded 6,000 MW in 20 days and exceeded 7,000 MW once.

The official also noted that in 2019, the demand throughout May ranged between 4,277 MW and 6,461 MW. Comparing the peak demands of April in both years, the official pointed out that the city recorded a peak demand between 4,170 MW and 6,197 MW in 2022 while it tapered off in 2023, with a range of 3,388 MW to 5,422 MW. The demand crossed the 5,000 MW mark only on three occasions.
