The Election Commission of India (ECI) has identified 89.88 lakh elector records with anomalies in Telangana ahead of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. This figure represents 37.67 per cent of the state’s total 3.38 crore voters, according to Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C Sudharshan Reddy, who addressed the media on Saturday.

The CEO clarified that these flagged records are pre-SIR anomalies generated through data analysis and record mapping. He emphasized that the discrepancies do not automatically make any voter ineligible. Most of these issues are expected to be resolved through field verification and document checks during the upcoming revision exercise. Every eligible citizen will be given an opportunity to establish their eligibility, and the exercise aims to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls without removing genuine voters.

The anomalies detected include several logical inconsistencies in voter data. These include less than nine months age gap between siblings or progeny, less than 15 years age difference between parent and child, and more than 50 years age difference between parent and child. Other discrepancies involve less than 40 years age difference between grandparent and grandchild, different parent names in current and previous records, and different relative type mapping between records.

Additional categories of flagged records include cases where an elector is mapped with father as relation in current records but husband in previous SIR records. Incorrect age variations between current and previous records, instances where no supporting documents are available, and cases where only Aadhaar was submitted without other prescribed supporting documents have also been identified.

According to official data, 2.38 crore electors, representing 70.54 per cent of the electorate, have already been successfully mapped with historical electoral roll data. Around 99.64 lakh electors remain unmapped, while 89.88 lakh records have been flagged with one or more anomalies requiring verification. Officials maintained that most discrepancies are minor and can be corrected through document submission and field-level verification.

In terms of anomaly percentage, Medchal-Malkajgiri reported the highest rate at about 65 per cent, followed by Rangareddy at 52.70 per cent and Narayanpet at 44.16 per cent.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise will commence on June 25, with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) undertaking door-to-door distribution of enumeration forms. The exercise is designed to update and authenticate voter records while ensuring that every eligible elector remains on the rolls.

Officials said the revision process aims to create a more accurate and reliable electoral database for the state. The field verification exercise will provide voters an opportunity to submit necessary documents and clarify any discrepancies in their records, ensuring no genuine voter is excluded from the electoral rolls.
