Hyderabad is about to witness a rare event – two full moons in one month. This phenomenon is called a Blue Moon, although the moon itself will not actually be blue. Normally, we see one full moon each month, but once every 2-3 years, we get two full moons in the same month. This second full moon is referred to as a Blue Moon.

It’s important to note that the term Blue Moon is not officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union. It is a metaphor used in western folklore to describe the rarity of this event.

The first full moon was seen on August 2 at 12:02 am, and the second full moon will be visible on August 31 at 7:06 am. The last Blue Moon occurred in 2020 on October 31. Prior to that, we had Blue Moons in 2012 (August) and 2015 (July). In 2018, we were lucky to have two Blue Moons, one in January and one in March.

Now, let’s address a common question – will the Blue Moon actually be blue? The answer is no. The term Blue Moon refers to the timing of the event, not the color of the moon itself. The moon will maintain its usual silvery hue.
