Bob Lee, the former Chief Technology Officer of Square and creator of the mobile payment service Cash App, was tragically stabbed to death in San Francisco’s Rincon Hill neighborhood on Tuesday morning. The police received a report of the stabbing at around 2:35 am and found the victim, who was taken to a hospital but eventually succumbed to his injuries. Lee was 43 years old and had been the Chief Product Officer of San Francisco-based cryptocurrency startup MobileCoin since November 2021.

No arrests have been made in the case, and San Francisco police have not released any details about the suspect. Lee’s colleagues and friends have posted tributes on social media, with MobileCoin’s CEO describing him as “an artist” and “so much more than a technologist.” Lee believed in the right to privacy in the 21st century, and his vision for MobileCoin reflected that belief.

The tech industry has lost a brilliant mind and a passionate advocate for privacy. Lee’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through the products he helped create and the impact he had on the industry.
