This decision came after a canopy collapse at Terminal-1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Minister mentioned the possibility of creating an independent body to oversee airport safety.
Instructions were given to Delhi International Airport Limited for verification and inspection, supervised by the DGCA from the Ministry. The Minister expressed condolences for the lives lost in the incident and promised care for the injured. Emergency response teams were sent to conduct thorough inspections to prevent further casualties. Passengers affected by the incident were assured of refunds and assistance with alternative travel plans.
GMR Hyderabad International Airport authorities stated they undergo regular audits and follow standard operating procedures. The GMR-led Delhi International Airport Limited attributed the canopy collapse at Terminal-1 to heavy rains and winds. They offered compensation to those affected and formed a technical committee to investigate the incident’s cause.
