GHMC Cracks Down on Illegal Construction Waste Dumping

Hyderabad authorities are taking strict action against the illegal dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been actively enforcing penalties, collecting ₹42.21 lakh in fines over the past three months. This shows the city’s commitment to tackling the growing issue of waste disposal.

By January 2025, officials had identified 1,158 illegal dumping sites. Out of these, 762 cases were tracked, and fines were imposed. Kapra and Uppal recorded the highest violations, with penalties of ₹5.52 lakh and ₹3.38 lakh, respectively. In January alone, authorities found 333 new dumping locations, leading to ₹14.25 lakh in fines.

To curb illegal dumping, GHMC has strengthened its monitoring system. Assistant city planners and sanitation staff now work together to inspect construction sites, identify violators, and impose fines. If any public works contractor is found dumping waste illegally, they will also face penalties.

Alongside strict enforcement, GHMC is running awareness campaigns to educate the public and construction workers about proper waste disposal methods. Hyderabad has four C&D waste recycling plants in Jeedimetla, Fathullahguda, Shamshabad, and Thumkunta. These facilities provide an eco-friendly waste disposal option, charging ₹405-₹435 per tonne for transportation and processing.
