Many doctors working for the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) have been staying in Hyderabad hospitals for years, avoiding transfers. They use various reasons like spouses or expertise in super specialties to remain in the city hospitals. This has led to complaints from doctors working in rural areas who feel they are being treated unfairly.

Some doctors have been working in hospitals like Gandhi, Osmania, and Niloufer for decades. Despite multiple transfer attempts, they manage to stay due to their influence. Some doctors are accused of taking advantage of their spouses, while others argue that moving them would affect super specialty services in the city. These doctors also engage in private practice, which goes against the rules.

Data from the DME’s website shows 276 professors who have been in the same place for over four years, with 40% needing to be transferred. With the increase in medical colleges, doctors in rural areas hope the government will address this issue. For example, nephrology professor Kiranmayi Ismail has been at Osmania Hospital for 32 years, cardiology professor Dr Nitin Kumar at Gandhi Hospital for 30 years, anaesthesia professor Dr Sadhana Rai at Niloufer Hospital for 26 years, gastroenterology associate professor Dr Vasif Ali at Osmania Hospital for 30 years, and general surgery associate professor Dr Muralidhar at Gandhi Hospital for 25 years.
