After heavy rainfall in Hyderabad on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city and its surrounding areas for the next five days. This is due to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to various districts in Telangana. IMD has advised people to take necessary precautions and stay updated with weather alerts, as Hyderabad is likely to experience rainfall or thundershowers until Thursday.
The yellow alert issued by IMD for Hyderabad is only for one day, but for the entire state, it continues until July 19. So far, Hyderabad has received 182 mm of rainfall during the current southwest monsoon, which is slightly above the normal of 170.2 mm. According to T Balaji, also known as Telangana Weatherman, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to Telangana.
In response to the rains, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has deployed teams and pump sets to address water stagnation points in the city. The Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams are also on standby to clear water stagnation and attend to emergencies. Residents can contact the GHMC control room for assistance with rain-related issues.
The water level of Hussain Sagar Lake is being closely monitored, with officials prepared to manage any potential overflow and ensure the safety of nearby areas. Residents of low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant during this period of heavy rainfall.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have opened the gates of Hussain Sagar reservoir to release excess water downstream. GHMC officials are ready to take necessary action if the water level continues to rise, and residents of flood-prone areas have been warned to be cautious in the next 24 hours. It is important for residents to stay informed and follow safety instructions to ensure their well-being during this period of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
