The Telangana government is developing a comprehensive plan to prevent long-distance buses from entering the congested core areas of Hyderabad. The proposal involves establishing four major bus terminals at key entry points of the city, including Gajularamaram, Shamshabad, LB Nagar and Ghatkesar. These terminals will be integrated with the existing public transport network to ensure seamless connectivity for passengers.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar explained that the terminals are being proposed as interchange points for inter-district and inter-state buses. Long-distance buses arriving from neighboring states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, as well as those approaching via the Outer Ring Road, would terminate at these peripheral locations instead of proceeding into congested city areas. The government is also considering implementing a similar system for private buses operating in the region.
The government is currently examining land requirements for the proposed terminals, with approximately 100 acres at Gajularamaram and 150 acres near Shamshabad being considered for development. The size and facilities of these terminals will be planned keeping future passenger demand in mind. The planned addition of 2,200 electric buses to Hyderabad’s public transport fleet is expected to support the proposed network and enhance overall connectivity.
The proposed terminals will function as comprehensive interchange points rather than simple parking facilities. Passengers arriving at these terminals will be able to transfer to TGSRTC city buses, Metro trains or MMTS services to reach different parts of Hyderabad. The government has committed to strengthening last-mile connectivity from the terminals to ensure that relocating long-distance buses to the outskirts does not cause inconvenience to passengers. User charges on private buses using the terminals are also being considered, subject to necessary regulations.
Minister Prabhakar stated that the initiative aims to address growing traffic congestion and vehicular pollution caused by the increasing number of buses entering the city. He highlighted that private buses parked indiscriminately at different locations and the large number of buses operating on city roads, particularly during nighttime, were contributing significantly to the problem. If implemented, private buses operating to different states would also come under the terminal-based system.
