Hyderabad: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma of Telangana urged a comprehensive strategy to tackle climate change and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. This plan, he said, would greatly improve the economy, environment, and society.
Governor Varma echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision, highlighting the importance of global cooperation on climate action. He stressed the need for joint efforts in key areas like Energy, Transport, Buildings, Rural and Urban Development, Industry, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Promoting renewable energy and boosting energy efficiency are crucial. “Energy efficiency alone can reduce climate impact by over 40%,” he noted.
The Governor’s plan includes leading afforestation drives by the Forest and Environment Department, aiming to expand Telangana’s green area to 50% by 2047. Public awareness campaigns are also essential, targeting everyone, especially women and students, to encourage energy conservation and sustainable habits.
A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy, the Southern Regional Media Adviser to BEE, along with senior officers from EESL, updated the Governor on progress in energy efficiency. They discussed the BEE’s Standards and Labelling (S&L) program, which includes mandatory standards for 16 appliances like air conditioners, fans, and refrigerators, out of a total of 39 covered appliances.
