The Delhi High Court asked the police for their opinion on a petition by student activist Sharjeel Imam. He wants to get rid of a charge sheet that added the charges of sedition and hate speech to his criminal case. This is about a speech he gave at Jamia Millia Islamia in December 2019. The court gave the prosecution time to file a status report. The first supplementary charge sheet was filed on April 16, 2020.

Imam’s lawyer said that they only challenge the addition of sedition and hate speech charges. The Supreme Court has stopped these charges from being used. The lawyer also said that the Delhi Police already made a separate complaint about these charges for two other speeches during the anti-CAA protests, including the speech mentioned in this case.

The petition also wants the trial court to continue with the trial for all the other charges in the case.
