Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has successfully completed a 90-day special drive to improve the city’s sewerage system. During this effort, 2,200 kilometers of sewer pipelines were cleaned, and de-silting work was carried out in 1.75 lakh manholes across 17,050 areas in Hyderabad. The drive officially concluded on Tuesday.
Officials from the Hyderabad Water Board shared that the initiative has significantly reduced daily sewage complaints by 30 percent. To ensure the drive’s efficiency, a special dashboard was created to monitor progress daily. Complaints, including sewage overflow, polluted water, and silt on roads, were tracked using GPS and recorded on Google Maps. The system displayed bubbles on the map, with the bubble size representing the severity and frequency of complaints in different areas. This visualization helped prioritize and resolve issues effectively.
The dashboard also allowed tracking of the length of cleaned pipelines and the number of manholes serviced. Photos documenting the work were uploaded to maintain transparency. MD Ashok Reddy assured citizens that the Water Board will continue to work diligently to improve services in the future.
A senior HMWSSB officer explained that the drive focused on analyzing complaints from the past three years. The primary issues addressed were sewer blockages in residential areas and sewer overflows on roads, which made up 60 percent of daily complaints. By targeting these problems, the board effectively resolved many long-standing concerns.
The HMWSSB’s efforts have set a strong foundation for improving the city’s sewerage infrastructure, ensuring better service delivery for Hyderabad residents.
