The long-pending Hyderabad–Bijapur National Highway expansion is now progressing at a rapid pace, bringing relief to commuters and boosting connectivity in the western outskirts of Hyderabad. The project, being executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to transform the existing narrow road into a modern four-lane highway.

Officials said work is currently underway across a 46-kilometre stretch from the Police Academy to Manneguda, with multiple teams working in shifts to meet the target completion timeline of 18 months.

₹928 Crore Project to Upgrade Key Corridor

The total cost of the highway expansion stands at approximately ₹928 crore, of which nearly ₹786 crore is allocated for road construction, including underpasses, culverts, and service roads. The remaining amount is being spent on land acquisition.

The existing road, which is currently around 25–30 feet wide, is being upgraded into a 100-feet-wide four-lane highway with a central divider. The project also includes the construction of 18 underpasses near villages and over 30 culverts and small bridges to ensure smooth water drainage and prevent flooding.

Work Progresses in Multiple Sections

Construction is being carried out in four batches, with dedicated teams handling approximately 10 kilometres each. Officials confirmed that more than 50% of earthwork and leveling has already been completed on several stretches.

Work has progressed significantly between Manneguda in Vikarabad district and Mudimyala in Chevella mandal, while construction activity in Moinabad has picked up in recent weeks. Culvert construction is nearing completion, and underpass works are ongoing in multiple village locations.

Bypass Roads Near Completion

As part of the project, bypass roads are being developed to ease congestion in towns such as Moinabad and Chevella. Several bypass stretches, including routes connecting Kanakamamidi, Kesaram, Ibrahimpalli, and surrounding areas, are already nearing completion.

These bypasses are expected to significantly reduce travel time and divert heavy traffic away from densely populated areas.

Environmental Concerns Addressed

The project had earlier faced delays after environmental groups raised concerns over the potential loss of nearly 900 banyan trees. A case was filed before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), temporarily halting the works.

Following discussions led by public representatives and officials, a revised design was approved. Under the new plan, only about 136 banyan trees will be relocated, while the majority are being preserved by constructing the highway on either side of the trees.

In cases where removal is unavoidable, trees are being carefully transplanted along the corridor.

Focus on Road Safety After Rising Accidents

The expansion comes in response to increasing safety concerns on the existing road. Officials revealed that since 2023, the stretch has witnessed over 335 accidents, resulting in around 125 deaths and more than 340 injuries.

The current road has over 40 dangerous curves and 21 identified black spots, making it one of the accident-prone routes in the region.

A major accident in November 2025 near Mirzapur, where 19 people lost their lives after a collision between a tipper and an RTC bus, further highlighted the urgent need for expansion.

Improved Connectivity and Economic Impact

Once completed, the upgraded highway is expected to enhance connectivity between Hyderabad and Karnataka, support faster movement of goods, and boost economic activity in surrounding regions such as Chevella, Moinabad, Shankarpally, and Vikarabad.

The ongoing highway expansion has already started reflecting in the real estate market along the corridor. Land prices in several surrounding areas have reportedly surged by nearly 2 times since the commencement of the works. Locations such as Aziznagar, Himayatnagar, Surangal, Peddamanglatam, and Mudimyal are witnessing increased demand from investors and developers, driven by improved connectivity and future growth prospects. Real estate experts note that these areas are quickly emerging as new investment hotspots on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Officials believe the project will not only reduce travel time but also significantly improve road safety, traffic flow, and regional development in the coming years.
