Hyderabad, known as India’s leading IT hub, is facing severe internet disruptions across the city today after the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) reportedly cut underground and overhead cables.

The move, carried out without prior planning or intimation, has led to widespread outrage as work-from-home employees, IT companies, banks, and businesses heavily dependent on internet services were left stranded.

Local cable operators staged citywide protests, accusing authorities of acting in favor of large internet providers. They allege that the move is aimed at creating a monopoly for bigger service providers, which could eventually lead to residents being forced to pay exorbitant monthly bills.

“The government has taken a sudden and careless step, and it is the public who are paying the price. Small and medium internet providers are being wiped out overnight,” said one protesting operator.

With the city’s digital infrastructure crippled, IT sector productivity has come to a standstill, and employees working remotely were unable to log in. Banks and financial institutions also reported service slowdowns, further escalating concerns about economic losses.

Residents expressed frustration, pointing out that Hyderabad’s reputation as a tech hub is at risk if such disruptions continue. Many also demanded clarity on whether there is a long-term plan behind these actions or if the decision is being driven by private interests.

As of now, neither TGSPDCL nor the government has issued a detailed explanation for the large-scale cable cuts. Meanwhile, protests are intensifying across the city, with demands for immediate restoration of services and a transparent policy on internet infrastructure management.

If the disruption continues, experts warn that Hyderabad’s IT-driven economy could face serious setbacks, affecting both local businesses and global clients dependent on the city’s workforce.
