Hyderabad has been classified as a “Premium Life” city in a recent analysis comparing cost of living against quality of life across 23 Indian cities. The study, based on Numbeo’s database from August 2026, positions the Telangana capital in the category described as “expensive, but worth it,” reflecting its balance between higher living costs and superior lifestyle standards.

India Best & Worst Cities for Value

The analysis places Hyderabad in the upper right quadrant of the value matrix, with a cost of living percentile of approximately 65 and a quality of life percentile around 60. This positioning indicates that the city ranks above median on both parameters when compared to other major Indian urban centers included in the study. The quality of life assessment incorporates factors such as safety, healthcare, traffic conditions, pollution levels, and climate, with price-linked terms deliberately excluded from the formula.

The study categorizes Indian cities into four distinct quadrants based on their cost-to-quality ratio. “Best Value” cities offer high quality at low cost, while “Budget Living” locations are cheap but less comfortable. “Bad Value” cities combine high costs with low quality, whereas “Premium Life” cities like Hyderabad justify their higher expenses through better living standards. The analysis covers cities across six geographical regions: North, West, South, East, Central, and Northeast India.

As a representative of South India in the premium category, Hyderabad demonstrates that residents are willing to pay above-average costs for access to better infrastructure, services, and overall living conditions. The city’s placement suggests it has successfully developed its urban amenities and quality indicators while experiencing corresponding increases in living expenses. This pattern reflects the city’s growth trajectory as a major technology and business hub in recent years.

The percentile ranking system used in the study allows for direct comparison across all 23 cities analyzed, providing a standardized measure of how each urban center performs relative to others in India. Hyderabad’s mid-to-upper positioning in both cost and quality metrics places it among cities that offer substantial lifestyle benefits to justify their higher price points, according to the Numbeo methodology applied in this India-specific adaptation.
