The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has unveiled an ambitious transport infrastructure plan worth ₹4 lakh crore aimed at transforming the city’s mobility landscape by 2050. The comprehensive upgrade was discussed during a recent workshop on the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), outlining massive expansions across multiple transport networks.

The plan includes a significant expansion of the Metro network to 556.6 km, which will substantially increase connectivity across the metropolitan region. Alongside this, the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) rail network will be expanded to 336.4 km, providing enhanced suburban rail connectivity for commuters across Hyderabad.

The infrastructure upgrade also proposes the construction of 2,847 km of additional road corridors to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity. To address traffic bottlenecks, the plan includes 75 grade separators and 8 elevated roads at key junctions throughout the city.

Pedestrian safety and convenience have been prioritized with plans for 120 skywalks and foot over bridges (FOBs) across busy areas. The proposal also includes 34 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and 16 Road Under Bridges (RUBs) at railway crossings to eliminate level crossing delays and improve traffic flow.

A major focus of the plan is improving connectivity across the Musi River, with 29 new bridges proposed for construction. This will significantly enhance movement between different parts of the city that are currently separated by the river. Additionally, dedicated bus lanes and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridors extending up to 48 km are planned to promote public transport.

The infrastructure blueprint also includes the development of 7 inter-city bus and truck terminals to manage long-distance passenger and freight traffic more efficiently. These terminals are expected to decongest the city center and provide organized facilities for inter-city transport operations.

HMDA has launched three critical studies to guide Hyderabad’s future development. These include the Economic Development Plan (EDP), the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), and the Blue and Green Master Plan, all extending up to 2050. These integrated plans aim to ensure sustainable urban growth while addressing environmental and economic concerns.

The Comprehensive Mobility Plan is being prepared by LEA Associates South Asia, with various stakeholders currently reviewing the draft recommendations. The workshop saw participation from government officials, urban planners, and transport experts who examined the proposed infrastructure developments and their implementation strategies.
