Hyderabad has taken a significant step by launching a women’s horse-riding police unit. On Friday, the Hyderabad City Police introduced this new team, consisting of ten female constables from the Armed Reserve (AR). These women, now trained for two months, will manage security tasks, VIP escorts, and street patrols. City Police Commissioner C V Anand emphasized the importance of promoting women in various roles, marking a first for women in regular patrol duties.
The police department is also expanding its dog squad. With the current 34 dogs being overworked, plans are in place to increase the number to 54. These new dogs will undergo thorough training at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA). Commissioner C V Anand explained that these dogs will help in detecting explosives, finding drugs, and tracking criminals. A special committee will ensure the selection of top-quality dogs from breeders nationwide. In the first phase, 12 dogs have already been brought in, with more expected later.
A new facility for the dog squad and mounted unit is also in the works. Due to the construction of the new Osmania General Hospital (OGH), the existing mounted ground and stables at Goshamahal Police Stadium will move to a different location. Government funding will support this new development, which includes facilities for the City Security Wing, a vehicle impound yard, new horse stables, and a parade ground. The new infrastructure will span 11.5 acres and house 60 dogs. Tenders for this project will be finalized on September 8.
