The Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted a comprehensive two-day special enforcement drive against drunk driving on May 29 and May 30, 2026, as part of their continuous efforts to improve road safety and curb accidents caused by impaired driving. The operation resulted in the apprehension of 475 motorists who were found driving under the influence of alcohol across various parts of the city.

The enforcement drive revealed that the majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, with 397 cases registered against them. Additionally, 36 three-wheeler drivers and 42 drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles were booked under relevant legal provisions for driving while intoxicated. The operation was conducted at multiple checkpoints throughout Hyderabad to ensure maximum coverage and deterrence.

Detailed analysis of the cases showed varying levels of Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) among the offenders. The police recorded 90 cases with BAC levels between 30-50 mg/100 ml, while 202 cases fell in the 51-100 mg/100 ml range. More serious violations included 96 cases with BAC levels of 101-150 mg/100 ml and 43 cases between 151-200 mg/100 ml.

The enforcement drive also identified severely intoxicated drivers, with 24 cases recording BAC levels between 201-250 mg/100 ml and 11 cases in the 251-300 mg/100 ml range. Alarmingly, 9 cases showed BAC levels exceeding 300 mg/100 ml, indicating extremely dangerous levels of alcohol consumption before getting behind the wheel. Such high levels of intoxication significantly impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, posing serious risks to both the driver and other road users.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving and warned that such special enforcement operations will continue on a regular basis throughout the city. The department has deployed additional personnel and resources to conduct surprise checks at various locations, especially during evening hours and weekends when such violations tend to increase.
