A three-day international conference called ‘Advances in Plant Sciences for the Sustainable Future’ started the centenary celebrations of the Department of Botany at Osmania University in Hyderabad. Professor R Limbadri, chairman of Telangana State Council for Higher Education, talked about the importance of plant science research and mentioned the research done in the last 100 years.
Professor D Ravinder, the vice chancellor of OU, stressed the importance of research and its benefits, which should be shared with people through the media. Dr Sean Mayes, Global Programme Director at ICRISAT in Hyderabad, emphasized the significance of high-yielding varieties and market-oriented research to help poor farmers. He highlighted the importance of controlling gene expressions and improving underutilized crops to produce high-yielding varieties.
