The Greater Hyderabad Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) has successfully rescued an Indian Rock Python and a hen from a dance group that was allegedly using the animals in public performances during Ganesh immersion celebrations. The rescue operation took place in Jawaharnagar on September 20, 2026, with crucial support from Madhuranagar Police and SHO Prabhakar.
The GHSPCA team had been tracking the dance group for nearly five days after receiving credible information that a live snake was being exploited during public shows. The group had reportedly travelled from Visakhapatnam and was performing at various locations across the city during the festive celebrations. The animal welfare organization maintained surveillance to ensure the safe recovery of the animals.
On September 19, during a procession in Kondapur, the GHSPCA team attempted to apprehend the alleged snake handler. However, the handler managed to flee the scene before the team could reach him. This incident prompted the organization to intensify their efforts and coordinate more closely with local law enforcement authorities.
The following day, the GHSPCA team worked in coordination with the police and successfully apprehended the handler. Upon inspection, the Indian Rock Python and a hen were found in his possession. According to the organization, the python was being used in street performances, while the hen was also subjected to cruelty during the shows.
The Indian Rock Python is a protected species under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The use of such protected wildlife in public performances and entertainment activities is strictly prohibited under Indian law. The act provides comprehensive protection to various species of wild animals and birds, with severe penalties for violations.
The rescued animals have been taken into custody by the authorities, and further legal action is expected to be initiated against the handler. The GHSPCA continues to work with law enforcement agencies to prevent such instances of animal cruelty during public events and celebrations.
