The Jalpally municipality in Rangareddy has finally found a practical solution to the waste disposal issue. The Legacy Waste Disposal Unit that was set up last year is now in operation and providing a way to deal with the garbage problem. The municipality, which has 28 wards, generates a huge amount of garbage every day, about 4-6 tonnes. In the past, there were no suitable locations for waste disposal, but now the new unit in ward 21 is helping to address the problem. The municipal commissioner, N Vasanth Reddy, said that the unit was set up with a fund of over Rs.2.5 crore and includes a shredder, bailing machine, and weigh bridge. A private firm was awarded the contract for solid waste management.

The waste disposal unit uses a Trommel Screening System to treat and segregate the waste. Different materials are produced from the process, including Refused Dried Fuel (RDF) for cement factories, inert and construction and demolition (C&D) material for landfilling and road farming, and bio-soil for nurseries and non-food crops. About 15-20 lorries of waste are brought to the unit every day for processing. The unit can process 300-350 tonnes of waste per day. The project manager, Pavan Kumar, from CUBE-BIO Energy Pvt Ltd, explained that they will complete the processing within the next 15-20 days.
