Hyderabad: On Saturday, Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy highlighted a significant challenge for the proposed 42% reservation for backward classes (BCs) by the Congress government. A law from the previous KCR government limits total reservations to 50%, creating this hurdle.
During a Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting of the Telangana Congress, Revanth Reddy explained the impact of the previous law. This restriction means BCs would get less than 1% reservation in local bodies and other areas. To tackle this, the Congress government passed bills in the Assembly to eliminate the obstacle and issued an ordinance. However, these measures await approval from the Governor and President.
Revanth Reddy emphasized the Congress’s commitment to supporting BCs. He assured that Rahul Gandhi’s promise on BC reservation will be fulfilled. The state has engaged two lawyers to argue in the Supreme Court for the President’s approval of the bills within 90 days. This approach aims to expedite the pending BC bill issue. Pursuing a separate Supreme Court case could delay the listing significantly.
