On the eve of Buddha Purnima, participants from the Asian and Oceanic regions of the 72nd Miss World Festival visited Buddhavanam, a major Buddhist heritage site in Nagarjunasagar, located in Nalgonda district, Telangana.

This visit was more than a sightseeing trip. It offered the contestants a chance to explore Telangana’s deep spiritual roots and its centuries-old connection to Buddhism. The experience aimed to showcase India’s rich cultural and religious history.

The journey began with a stop near Chintapalli, followed by a scenic photo session at Vijay Vihar, overlooking the peaceful Nagarjunasagar reservoir. The main event was an in-depth tour of Buddhavanam, a sprawling 279-acre Buddhist theme park built by the Telangana Government as part of its effort to promote a Buddhist Circuit.

The contestants explored several key attractions:

    – The Mahastupa, known for its stunning carvings and unique lotus-inspired dome.
Buddhacharitha Vanam, which tells the story of Buddha’s life through detailed artwork.
Jataka Park, featuring stories from Buddha’s previous lives.
Dhyana Vanam, a peaceful space for meditation and reflection.
Stupa Vanam and the Buddhist Heritage Museum, which display rare artifacts and ancient sculptures.

Renowned archaeologist Dr. Shivanagi Reddy guided the group through the site. He explained the historical importance of Nagarjunakonda, a once-thriving center for Mahayana Buddhism during the Ikshvaku dynasty.

Inside the Great Stupa, the contestants took part in a calming meditation session. This was followed by the Baillikuppa Maha Bodhi Puja, a spiritual ceremony led by 25 Buddhist monks. The day ended with a captivating stage performance by 18 artists, who dramatically portrayed moments from the life of Gautama Buddha.

After this meaningful visit, the cultural tour continues:

    – On May 13, contestants will walk through the historic Charminar and shop at Laad Bazaar, followed by a royal dinner at Chowmahalla Palace, complete with live music.
    – On May 14, Group 1 will visit Warangal Fort, the 1000 Pillar Temple, and Bhadrakali Temple. Group 2 will head to the UNESCO-recognized Ramappa Temple, where they will witness the traditional Perini dance.
    – On May 15, Group 1 will explore the Yadagirigutta Temple, while Group 2 will visit Pochampally village, known globally for its beautiful Ikat textiles and recognized by UNWTO.
