The much-anticipated Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Musi River Rejuvenation Project is expected to be released soon, marking a significant step forward in the transformation of Hyderabad’s historic river.
The project will be executed in two initial phases. Phase 1A will cover the stretch from Himayat Sagar to Bapu Ghat, spanning 9.2 kilometers. Phase 1B will extend from Osman Sagar to Bapu Ghat, covering approximately 12 kilometers.
The rejuvenation initiative aims to restore the Musi River to its former glory while addressing critical environmental and urban development challenges that have plagued the river for decades.
Key Components of the Rejuvenation Project
The project encompasses several major components designed to transform the riverfront and surrounding areas. A prominent feature will be the Gandhi Sarovar at Bapu Ghat, which is expected to become a landmark destination along the river.
Pollution abatement forms a critical part of the initiative, focusing on reducing contamination and improving water quality in the river. This component will address decades of industrial and domestic waste discharge that has severely degraded the river ecosystem.
The project also includes the development of a Gateway of Hyderabad concept, which will create an iconic entrance to the city along the riverfront. Additionally, plans include the creation of an artificial beach and tourism infrastructure to attract visitors and boost local economic activity.
Official Launch Timeline
The official groundbreaking ceremony for the cleaning and revival works is scheduled for Ugadi 2026, which falls in March or April 2026. The timing of the launch coincides with the Telugu New Year, a culturally significant occasion in Telangana.
The Musi River has been central to Hyderabad’s history and development since the city’s founding. However, rapid urbanization and inadequate waste management systems have transformed the once-pristine waterway into one of the most polluted rivers in the region.
The rejuvenation project represents one of the most ambitious urban restoration initiatives undertaken in Telangana, with the potential to significantly improve environmental conditions and create new recreational spaces for residents.
The official groundbreaking ceremony is set for Ugadi 2026, marking the beginning of the transformation of the Musi River corridor.
