Nataraja in Warangal captures attention of needle

Mattewada Ajay Kumar, a self-taught international microsculptor from Warangal, has created a miniature sculpture of Lord Nataraja Swamy in the eye of a needle. The sculpture is incredibly small, measuring only 0.70 mm in height and 0.55 mm in width. Ajay used plastic powder, nylon pieces, soft wax, caterpillar hair for coloring, and 24-carat gold to create this unique piece.

Creating Nataraja’s hair was particularly challenging for Ajay, as he had to sculpt each strand meticulously. He also made a 90-micron sculpture of Apasmara under Nataraja’s feet. The entire process took him 145 hours spread over three months to complete. The final miniature sculpture can only be viewed through a microscope.

Ajay will be showcasing his miniature sculptures at the 10th World Art Dubai-2024 exhibition at the World Trade Centre in Dubai from May 2 to 5. Over 400 artists from 65 countries will be participating in this event. Ajay’s previous work includes wax-made idols depicting Mahatma Gandhi leading the Dandi March, which are now part of the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial Project in Gujarat.

In addition to his Nataraja sculpture, Ajay has also created miniature figurines of various dignitaries like AB Vajpayee, PV Narasimha Rao, Narendra Modi, KCR, and Prof. Jayashankar. His incredible creations have earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records multiple times for his exceptional talent.
