Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), a wing of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), has initiated the construction of Radial Road-2 (RR-2), an ambitious infrastructure project that will transform regional connectivity in Telangana. The 81.15-kilometre greenfield expressway will link the Outer Ring Road (ORR) at Kothwalguda/Budwel (Exit 17) with National Highway 167N near Nacharam in Kodangal constituency. HGCL has invited tenders for all three packages of the project, with the last date for submitting bids set for September 30. The stipulated completion period is 18 months from the date of agreement.
The project carries a total cost of over ₹3,295 crore and will pass through Rangareddy, Vikarabad and Narayanpet districts. The corridor is designed to connect Hyderabad’s southern urban belt with western Telangana, passing through Shamshabad, Shabad, Kondurg, Pudur and Pargi mandals. The expressway has been divided into three distinct packages for efficient execution and management.
Package-I covers the stretch from Budwel to Shabad (0-29.50 km) with an estimated cost of ₹1,237.16 crore. This section will connect the ORR with the Shabad industrial cluster, enhancing access to key manufacturing zones. Package-II spans from Shabad to Gudur (29.50-56.50 km) at a cost of ₹1,024.55 crore. The final segment, Package-III, extends from Gudur to Nacharam (56.50-81.15 km) with an estimated cost of ₹1,034.47 crore and will culminate near Kosgi/Kodangal at NH-167N.
The expressway will be developed as a four-lane (2+2) corridor with a 75-metre right-of-way. A key feature of the design includes a depressed central median reserved to accommodate a future Metro corridor, demonstrating forward-thinking urban planning. The infrastructure will include several vehicular and light vehicular underpasses, along with major and minor bridges and culverts to ensure smooth traffic flow and connectivity.
According to sources, the project is expected to divert heavy freight, cargo and industrial traffic from Karnataka and western Telangana away from Hyderabad’s core road network and directly onto the ORR. This strategic diversion will significantly reduce congestion in the city’s central areas while improving access to emerging industrial and growth areas. The corridor will support regional connectivity and logistics, strengthening industrial corridors across the region.
RR-2 forms part of HMDA’s broader plan to develop radial roads connecting the ORR with the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR). The project supports urban expansion in the Peripheral Urban Region (PURE) and improves access to state and national highways. The expressway will provide a direct link between the ORR and the proposed RRR, facilitating seamless movement of goods and people across the region.
