New York Bill proposes allowing people to pay State fees with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Assemblyman Clyde Vanel recently introduced Assembly Bill A7788, which aims to amend the existing law to allow New York state agencies to accept cryptocurrencies as payment.

If the bill is passed, individuals will be able to use cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash to pay taxes, fines, fees, rent, civil penalties, or any other financial responsibilities owed to the state. This would provide New Yorkers with more options when it comes to paying what they owe.

To ensure fairness for the government, the bill also allows the state to impose a service fee, as long as it does not exceed the cost of processing the crypto payment. This fee would cover expenses like blockchain transaction fees or fees to payment processors.

This is not the first crypto bill proposed in New York. Last month, Bill A06515 was introduced to prevent crypto scams and fraud. The timing of these bills indicates that legislators are giving more attention to crypto legislation and adoption.

On a national level, President Donald Trump’s return to office in January has increased the focus on cryptocurrencies. Trump has expressed support for blockchain innovation and integrating crypto into the US economy. This has motivated several states to explore collaborations with cryptocurrencies.

Assembly Bill A7788 is currently being reviewed by the Assembly Committee. If it progresses and passes the state Senate, New York could become the first state to accept crypto for government payments.
