North Korea has recently tested a new nuclear underwater attack drone under the guidance of its leader, Kim Jong Un. The drone is intended to make sneak attacks in enemy waters and destroy naval striker groups and major operational ports. During the drill, the North Korean drone cruised underwater for over 59 hours and detonated in waters off its east coast on Thursday. The KCNA, North Korea’s state news agency, did not elaborate on the drone’s nuclear capabilities. In a separate firing drill, North Korea fired four cruise missiles on Wednesday to practice carrying out tactical nuclear attack missions. The missiles were tipped with a “test warhead simulating a nuclear warhead,” and flew 1,500 to 1,800 kilometres. The South Korean military has confirmed the missile launches. North Korea has carried out several nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017, and there are concerns that these tests may have contaminated the groundwater in the area where they were conducted.
