Protesting Farmers Overcome Obstacles at Jantar Mantar, Where Wrestlers are Demonstrating

Farmers from the Bharatiya Kisan Union went to Jantar Mantar on Monday. This is where wrestlers have been protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh since April 23. The farmers wanted to join the protest and can be seen in videos trying to climb over barricades to get to the protest site.

The police had moved some barricades at the back to make it easier for the farmers to get through. The day before, BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) activists tried to protest at Tikri border but were denied entry by the police. Some of them managed to get past the barriers and into the city.

Around 2,000 police officers were deployed during the farmers’ march to Jantar Mantar on Sunday. The Delhi Police says people are only allowed to enter Delhi in their own cars or buses, not on tractor trolleys.

The wrestlers have given the Centre until May 21 to meet their demands. Wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat said they were ready for a long fight during a briefing in front of almost 2,000 supporters from khaps, farmer, and women organisations.

The Kaiserganj BJP MP says he is innocent and that he had been singled out because he had improved the selection procedures for wrestlers.
