The Ministry of Finance has announced that all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will remain open on Sunday, 27th September 2026, to ensure uninterrupted banking services for customers. This decision comes in response to a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) scheduled from September 28 to 30, 2026. The strike, combined with the preceding weekend holidays of September 26 and 27, would have resulted in an extended period of banking disruption for the public.
The Reserve Bank of India has granted approval for all bank branches, offices, ATM-link branches and Currency Chests to remain fully operational on 27.09.2026. This proactive measure by the government aims to safeguard the banking needs of citizens and prevent any inconvenience that could arise from a prolonged closure of banking facilities. The government has taken this step to ensure that genuine banking requirements of the public are not adversely affected during this period.
The Department of Finance has emphasized that the welfare and convenience of bank customers remains the government’s foremost priority. Both the government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike. Additional measures have also been implemented to ensure that essential banking services continue without interruption during the strike period.
The announcement was issued by the Ministry of Finance through the Press Information Bureau on 23 September 2026 at 12:54 PM. The decision reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining essential financial services and minimizing disruption to daily banking operations for millions of customers across the country who depend on these services for their personal and business transactions.
