The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) is planning to build a 100-megawatt pumped storage hydroelectric project at the Jawahar Khani opencast mine in Yellandu mandal, Bhadradri Kothagudem district. The project aims to enhance energy efficiency and is currently being investigated by Tata Consultancy.

The project involves constructing a cement reservoir to store water on a bund, which will be filled with mine water during the day using solar energy. The water will then be discharged back into the mine at night to produce hydroelectric power. This process creates an effective energy storage system with quick response times.

If successful, the pumped storage hydropower project will allow Singareni to produce power at a reasonable price at night, reducing the need for thermal power and saving the corporation money. This technology functions as a bridge, storing excess energy during surpluses and releasing it when needed, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.

Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is seen as a reliable and flexible technology that is more efficient and cost-effective than battery storage. It has an energy conversion rate exceeding 80% and is known for its reliability, durability, and minimal environmental footprint. This makes it suitable for various environments due to its scalability and versatility.
