Intense rainfall in upstream regions is causing major flooding in the Telugu states, with the Krishna and Godavari rivers experiencing high water levels. This has led many irrigation projects to reach their capacities.
The Tungabhadra Dam is critically affected, with an inflow of 42,290 cusecs and an outflow of 40,231 cusecs. To manage this, authorities have opened 11 gates. The dam’s water level is currently 1,624.86 feet, close to its full capacity of 1,633 feet.
In Kurnool district, the Sunkesula Project is at full capacity. Water is being released to the Srisailam reservoir through 13 gates. The reservoir holds 0.68 TMC of its 1.20 TMC capacity.
The Srisailam Dam is receiving heavy inflow, requiring adjustments to manage water levels. Three gates have been raised by 10 feet to release water downstream. The inflow is 148,696 cusecs, and the outflow is 148,734 cusecs. The reservoir’s storage level is 203 TMC of its 215 TMC capacity, with the water level at 882.80 feet, just below the full level of 885 feet.
Water release from Srisailam has led to flooding in the Nagarjunasagar project, which is receiving 118,167 cusecs while releasing 5,612 cusecs. The current water level is 543.60 feet, below its full level of 590 feet.
The Kadem project in Nirmal district is also facing severe flooding. Officials have opened one gate for water release. The inflow is 4,433 cusecs, and the outflow is 4,346 cusecs, with the water level at 693 feet, close to the maximum of 700 feet.
Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation to manage the flood impact effectively.
